The Greatest Christmas Gift

2 Cor. 9:15

I. SALVATION IS A GIFT

A. Romans 6:23. "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

B. When the Bible refers to salvation as "the gift of God", it means just that; a gift. A gift cannot be earned; it is not a recompense for service rendered.

C. Romans 3:24. "Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus." Ephesians 2:8-9.

II. WHY MUST SALVATION BE A GIFT?

A. Because man does not have the ability to blot out his past sins or to give himself eternal life. Man is spiritually dead. Ephesians 2:1.

B. What the sinner needs is not reformation of character or dead religion. He needs life. John 5:24.

III. SALVATION IS A GIFT PURCHASED AT A GREAT PRICE

A. The fact that God offers salvation to us as a "gift" does not mean that it cost nothing. Jesus paid the price at Calvary.

B. I Peter 3:18. "For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God..

IV. MEN OFTEN TREAT GIFTS LIGHTLY

A. Such gifts as the Bible, our freedom in America, great medical discoveries, and the very air we breath are gift from God. We give little consideration to them because they are gifts.

B. People neglect salvation because it is a gift. Hebrews 2:3.

V. A GIFT MUST BE ACCEPTED

A. You can't work for a gift, you can't earn a gift.

B. The gift of salvation is centered in the Lord and his death.

1. John 1:12. "But as many as received him, to them he gave.."

Conclusion: This gift is for a limited time only.

A. Isaiah 55:6. "Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near."

B. II Corinthians 6:2. "...now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation."
