"Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews?" .. ." (Matt. 2:1-2). INTRODUCTION: One may be wise in the things of the world, and at the same time be ignorant in spiritual matters. "The wisdom of this world is foolishness with God." There were wise men at Jerusalem who could read the stars, had no doubt saw the same star. These wise men men of science, were wise I. BECAUSE THEY POSSESSED THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD*S WORD "Where is he that is born King of the Jews" (V. 2). This question breathes with faith in the word of God. They knew some. thing about God's promises. They had scientific knowledge, but they had more, they had the knowledge which is the basis of all true knowledgethe knowledge of God. II. BECAUSE THEY DISCERNED GOD'S SIGN "For we have seen his star" (V. 2). They recognized God's sign of the Messiaha prophecy (Num. 24:17). They had Spiritual, prophetic insight. This could have been nothing less than a divine gift in response to faith. III. BECAUSE THEY SOUGHT THE LORD OF THE SIGN "And have come to worship him" (v. 2). They could have used their scientific knowledge in seeking out the sign, but instead they sought the One to whom the sign pointedthe new born King. IV. BECAUSE THEY WORSHIPPED THE LORD OF THE SIGN These wise men were wise not because they found Him, but because they acknowledged Him in worship: (1) as King; (2) as Priest, and (3) as Saviour (V. 11).
