"O give thanks unto the Lord: for He is good: for his mercy endureth for ever" (Psalms 136:1) The fourth Thursday in November Is a national holiday reserved only for Americans. It Is Thanksgiving Day, which was started by the first pilgrims who came to America. They came seeking liberty to worship God without Interference from the government. Many of them lost their lives during that first long winter. The following fall, at the first harvest of their crops, they gathered together for a day of thanksgiving to God for the food they harvested. Americans, especially Christian Americans, still celebrate Thanksgiving each year, as It is observed as one of our national holidays.
Here In Psalms 136:1, the Bible says to "give thanks unto the Lord." Those of us who are saved know that not only every good and perfect gift comes down from God (see James 1:17). but He holds our every breath in His hand. "In Him we live, and move, and have our being" (Acts 17:28). Certainly, everyone should give thanks to the Lord, but especially all those that are saved owe a debt of gratefulness to the Lord that no one else does.
If we begin to count our blessings and give thanks to God, there will never be any room for complaining. We should give thanks for our health. So many times we seem to think that health is something that comes automatically, but health is a gift from God. Without health, It Is almost Impossible to be happy or enjoy life. We should give thanks, too, for all material things - - our jobs, homes, clothes, and automobiles. All these things come from God.
Most of all, we should thank God for our salvation in Jesus Christ. Some day our life on this earth will be over, but there Is another life. Those of us who have taken Jesus as our Savior have a beautiful home in heaven with Him forever. Thank God for life eternal in Jesus Christ. Give thanks to God as we celebrate this Thanksgiving season. A Mini-Sermon From Billy Bryant |
