When God Became A Man
(Studies In Matthew - Chapter 1)

Introduction:

"The Book of the Generations"- compare with Gen. 5:1 and 1 Cor. 15:22. In Adam all die, but in Christ shall all be made alive.

 

I. THE BACKGROUND OF JESUS

A. He had a human background- mother was Mary

B. He had a Gentile background-
Many OT men took Gentile brides. Some are named in this chapter such as Rahab (the Ammorite), Bethsheba (the Hittite), and Thamar ( the Canaanite).

C. He had a Jewish background- (tribe of Judah)

D. He had a royal background-
Joseph, his foster parent, was a descendant of David(v.1)
Compare Acts 2:29-36; 2 Chron.36:1-7; Jer. 22:24-30).

E. He had a holy background-
Conceived of the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:26-28). Forty two generations covering a period of approximately 1921 to 1991. About 45 to 47 years to the generation.

 

II. THE BIRTH OF JESUS

A. Virgin Birth- begat is omitted (v.16)

B. Divine Birth- Holy Spirit conception (v.20)

C. Lowly Birth- No room in the inn (2:1-7)

 

IIIL THE BIRTHRIGHT OF JESUS

A. Christ (v.16)

Word means "Messiah." The Anointed One connects him to all Old Testament Scriptures- (Jn. 4:25)

B. Jesus (v.21)

The word means "Jehovah is Savior." It is the same as the Old Testament word Joshua.

1. Omniptent Savior - Rom. 1:16 and 10:13

2. Willing Savior- John 10:11

3. Living Savior- Rev. 1:18

4. Present Savior- 2 Cor. 6:2

5. Personal Savior- Jn. 1:12

C. Emmanuel- Vs.23

The word means "God with man."
1. In Our Lives-Gal. 2:20

2. In Our Labors- 1 Cor. 3:9

3. In Our Trials- Heb. 13:5

4. In Our Worship- Matt.18:20

5- In Our Time of Death- Psm. 23:4
