THE REQUEST OF PRAYER

Matthew 6:9-13

INTRO. As we petition God in prayer, we must be willing to accept His answer to our petition as being the best for us. This reveals our resignation to God.

1. Sometimes God*s answers are Direct-Genesis 24:15

2. Sometimes God*s answers are Delayed-John 11:1-6

3. Sometimes God*s answers are Denied--II Corinthians 12:7-8

4. Sometimes God*s answers are Different -Romans 1:9—11; 15:29-33

I. THE  MOCKERY IN OUR PETITIONS - James 2:14-16

1. Petition without Scriptural Teaching-Matthew 6:5-7

2. Petition without Simple Trust- Hebrews 11:6

3. Petition without Surrendering Totally-James 4:3

4. Petition without Sins Terminated- Psalm 66:18 Matthew 6:14-15

II. THE MISUNDERSTANDINGS ABOUT OUR PETITIONS -Romans 8:26-27

1. Pray whether you feel like it or not-Rescue from selfish emotions

2. Pray for others (Churches, enemies, believers)Rescue from self—centeredness

3. Pray on a regular basis- Rescue from slackness

4. Pray in an orderly manner- Plan out your prayers-Rescue from sloppiness

III. THE MANNER OF OUR PETITIONS - Hebrews 4:14-16

1. The Provision from our Petitions- Matthew 6:11

(1) The Source- God Matthew 7:7-11

(2) The Supplication- "Give"

To whom will He give? Proverbs 3:9-10; 10:3 , Psalm 33:18—19; 34:9-10; 37:3—8

(3) The Seekers- "us" Reveals the concept of Sharing- No "I*s" and "me*s" in this prayer

(4) The Schedule- "this day" One day at a time- Matthew 6:34

(5) The Substance- "bread" All man's needs

     1. Rations- Gen. 1:29-37

     2. Raiment- Matt. 6:25-34

     3. Rest- Matt. 11:28-29; Heb. 4:9

2. The Protection From Our Petitions

    (1) From Foes- Eph. 6:18-19

    (2) From Faltering- Prov. 3:6

    (3) From Fear- Phil. 4:6-7

3. The Power From Our Petitions

   (1) Power For Our Work- Acts. 4:31

   (2) Power For Our Weaknesses- Ja.4:2

   (3) Power For Our Worship-

       Clears up misunderstandings; stops jealousy; roots our heresy; unites divisions
