"CHURCH UNITY"

TEXT: PHILIPPIANS 2:1-4

One preacher has said that one of the greatest dangers facing the church is that of disunity, division, or a broken fellowship. The church can cope with many difficult problems and not be over come by them. The church can flourish in the midst of external attacks from her enemies. But if the fellowship of the church is ever broken it will take a generation for it to recover!

I. THE BASIS OF CHURCH UNITY

A. Consolation in Christ: (vs.1)

B. Comfort of Love: (vs.1)

C. Control of the Spirit: (vs.1) Speaks not only of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, but of the believer's surrender to the Holy Spirit. The believer is controlled by the Spirit.

D. Compassion of the Heart: (vs.1)

II. THE BLESSING OF CHURCH UNITY (vs.2) "Fulfil ye my joy..."

III. THE BEHAVIOR OF CHURCH UNITY

There is the Behavior of:

A. Harmony: (vs.2) "...that ye be like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind."

1. Oneness of Purpose: "like-minded" The church's ultimate end is the glory of God.

2. Oneness of Passion: "...having the same love..."

3. Oneness of Power: "...being of one accord..."

4. Oneness of Program: "...of one mind..." Promoting the Gospel that sinners maybe saved!

B. Humility: (vs.3)

1. No Party Spirit: "Let nothing be done thru strife...

2. No Promotion of Self: "...or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves."

C. Helpfulness: (vs.4)
