II Timothy 1:1-7 INTRODUCTION: There are several things in our local churches today that we do not need. 1. We don't need all these old gimmicks. 2. We don't need these godless, long-haired men and mini-skirted women as members. 3. We don't need these gutless preachers who won't preach against abortion, adu[tery, etc. 4 .There are some things in these verses that we need in our churches today. I. We need sincere ministers--verses 1-3. A. Paul was called--verse 1--by the will of God. No matter what the modernists say, everyone who is saved is not called to preach the Word-- Ep hesians 4:11. B. Paul was compassionate--verse 2. Timothy, my dearly beloved son--you can almost feel the heartbeat of love in this statement. C. Paul was concerned--verse 3. He remembered Timothy in prayer day and night. II. We need sober men--verse 4. Timothy, I am mindful of your tears and your soberness. A. Tears move God--Hezekiah with face to wall. B. Tears move gricvances--Jacob meeting Esau. C. Tears minister grace to others--Psalms 126:5-6. III. We need sainted mothers--verse 5. A. Mothers to pray--Hannah--I Samuel 2. B. Mothers to stay with God. Timothy, the faith that dwelt (lodged-stayed) in your grandmother, Lois. Lois was not up and down, in and out, but the faith dwelt or, literally, lodged in her. IV. We need sensitive motives--verse 6. We should sing, preach, and pray fervently because they that are in the flesh cannot please God. God pronounces a curse on those who are lukewarm--Revelation 1:16. V. We need sound minds--verse 7. A. In doctrine. B. In discernment. C. In death. SERMON FROM DR. EDGAR THOMAS |
