Introduction: ! When a person accepts Jesus Christ as their personal Savior, a remarkable event happens simultaneously at the time of salvation -- that person becomes filled with the Holy Spirit of God. No second stage to salvation as some teach!! Many are afraid to use the term "filled with the Spirit"; but that is not a harmful term to the believer!Being filled with the Spirit means that you henceforth will yield yourself to the leadership of the Holy Spirit in ALL areas of your life, personal, family, job, spiritual, financial -- the key word is yielding!(Define YIELD) -- Romans 6:13! The major problem any Christian has today who says that God is just not blessing their life is simple-- the Holy Spirit has not been yielded to: there is some area within their life that they refuse to relinquish control of so that prohibits the Holy Spirit from assuming full control.! Look at some areas tonight what the Holy Spirit does or can do if we will let Him have his way... I. THE HOLY SPIRIT RELATES TO HIS FAMILY -- v. 14-17A. Bears witness of WHO we are -- "children of God"; v. 14, 16b B. Bears witness of WHAT we are -- "heirs and joint-heirs"; v. 17aA lost person cannot claim this inheritance! -- 1 Cor. 6:9-11 C. Bears witness of WHY we suffer -- "we may be also glorified together"; v.17bD. Paul gives a precious truth for believers -- v. 18
II. THE HOLY SPIRIT REALIZES OUR FAULTS -- v. 26a .Infirinities -- weakness, frailty. sickly conditionRealizes our inability to understand a thing about the things of God -- 1 Cor. 2:14 A..Realizes our inability to do great and glorious things in and of ourselves -- 2 Cor. 12:11: Paul recognized this! B.Realizes our inability to control our thoughts and desires -- 1 Cor. 10:13; remember, GOD makes the escape route, we need 1-IIM C. Realizes our inability to bear trials and troubles alone Song -- "I Must Tell Jesus -- cannot bear these burdens alone" III. THE HOLY SPIRIT RECOGNIZES OUR FAILURE IN PRAYER -- v. 26bA..We don 't know how to pray--Luke 11:1Pray to the Father; acknowledge Him for who He is and praise Him as such. B.We don 't know what to pray for1.Pray in God 's will-- 11:2b2.Pray for today 's needs to be met-- 11:33.Pray for forgiveness of our sins -- 11:44.Pray we will forgive those around us -- 11:45.Pray for strength to resist temptation and the wiles of the Devil -- 11:46..Pray believing that God will answer your prayers -- 11:9-10a.Must be in the proper spirit; i.e. selfish, fleshly b.Must be in God *s will -- God will not answer a prayer that is not in accordance with His plan and will for your life
IV. THE HOLY SPIRIT REACHES ON OUR BEHALF TO THE FATHER -- v. 26-27 A. Feel like sometimes the prayers bounce off the ceiling? B. Just as Christ intercedes for us in Heaven, the Holy Spirit intercedes for us in our hearts --hence the name "Comforter" -- John 14-16 1.Enlightening Spirit -- teaches us what to pray for 2. Sanctifying Spirit -- works and excites praying graces 3.Comforting Spirit -- silences our fears; helps us through times of discouragement -- John 14:16 C.Exodus 14:15; Moses prayed in the Spirit and not a word was spoken; "criest thou unto me--heaviness of heart -- God understands these prayers best; not a word known of what Moses prayedl D.Holy Spirit does not work through the rhetoric and eloeiuence of our prayers -- but through the faith and fervency of our prayers! E. Holy Spirit always works "according to the will of God" -- v. 27 F. The Spirit in the heart never contradicts the Spirit in the Word! ! I have been taught great lessons in the last several weeks about relinquishing all to the Holy Spirit --my will; my ministry; my health; my family.! I have fully resolved to let the Holy Spirit dictate every aspect of my life, where I thought I had previously done so... many cannot understand how the Holy Spirit operates, because they have never allowed the Spirit to truly fill them!! Tonight. I ask each of you to come to this altar, and pray with faith and with fervency for this ministry -- cry out to Heaven! Shed some tears that God will move mightily in this work! Shed some tears and invite the Holy Spirit to take full control of your life and family tonight!! If you have never been born again -- I invite you to come and trust Christ tonight -- let the Holy Spirit fill you and show you just how full of a life you can live!SERMON FROM PASTOR TOM FELLOWS
