"Preach The Word"

The Holy Spirits DNA in You

Text:  Galatians 1:15-17 & Psalms 139:14

Galatians 1:15-17

15 But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me by his grace,

16 To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood:

17 Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damascus. [1]

Psalm 139:14

14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.  [2]

Introduction:

Don’t write me off just because of the title. Hear me out and I think you’ll understand what I mean by it.

In the fictional movie Jurassic Park dinosaurs were created from the DNA found in the blood that a mosquito had sucked from a dinosaur millions of years ago.

The mosquito had been trapped in tree sap where it was perfectly preserved. It was there inside the DNA in that blood that they found the genetic code to recreate dinosaurs. Although this movie was fictional in hat we do have the power to create life, it contained a lot of truth about DNA.

Each strand of DNA, [ d (eoxyribo deoxyribo ) n ( ucleic nucleic ) a ( cid acid ) ], created by God was designed to bring about God’s powerful purpose in its specific place in creation. DNA is a nucleic acid that carries the genetic information in the cell and is capable of self-replication and synthesis of RNA [r (ibo) n (ucleic) a (cid).] the sequence of nucleotides within a strand of DNA determines our personal hereditary characteristics. The power of the Holy Spirit set in motion in that first DNA strand continues to be felt throughout God’s creation.

We have come to learn over the last several years that we possess a personal DNA, much like a finger print – it can define the one and only you. Most of who we are is locked into our personal DNA when we are conceived and formed in the womb. Our gender, our temperament, color of hair, our eyes, all this is locked up in our DNA code.

The Bible reveals that God thought of you, then HE designed you and finally HE created you. HE created you through the power of the Holy Spirit. Jeremiah writes –

Jeremiah 1:4-5

4 Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.  [3]

God is telling Jeremiah that long before he was ever born, HE knew him and then HE formed him in his mother’s womb and HE did this with a specific reason in mind. He, Jeremiah, was to be set apart as a prophet to the nations.

Now, let’s turn to us – imagine your life – designed before your birth to fulfill a specific purpose in God’s plan. Job said:

Job 33:4

4 The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life. [4]

** Try to imagine God reserving a special calling for you before HIS Spirit made you. God assigned you a specific DNA code that has produced your physical make-up. But, HE likewise, through HIS Spirit has placed “spiritual” DNA code in you that will produce your spiritual make-up and equip you for a specific purpose in God’s plan.

Paul recognized that God had a specific purpose for his life, as he wrote: (TEXT VERSES)

** God had set Paul apart for this specific purpose – to preach to the Gentiles the Gospel of Jesus Christ – but, Paul did not understand or start to fulfill this purpose UNTIL THE GRACE OF GOD CALLED HIM. Meaning not until after Paul’s spiritual experience did he know what God wanted with his life.

This does not mean “whatever will be, will be” for we can frustrate God’s specific purpose for our lives. Being “free moral agents” we can defeat God’s intentional will for our lives. Paul writes about his way of life BEFORE he discovered God’s specific purpose:

Galatians 1:13-14

13 For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews’ religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it:

14 And profited in the Jews’ religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers.  [6]

** Listen to this statement – “God’s grace is designed to call us BACK to what God created us for and sets us apart for that purpose.”

*** Salvation is not only intended to get us to Heaven, but it is so designed to get us BACK to the place that we DO God’s original purpose for our lives.

*** Salvation is about God calling a lost world BACK to HIS original plan. It is about calling each of us BACK to the purpose for which HE created us in the beginning.

God purposed and planned this existence of this world – HE gave the command and it was Jesus Christ who was there creating the elements to fulfill God’s plan and purpose. THEN, the Holy Spirit moved over those elements and started them in motion to reach the boundaries of God’ intended purpose.

** So, as God intended this world to have purpose, HE also intended our lives to have purpose and for that intended purpose to be fulfilled we must be obedient to the Holy Spirit.

I.                  The Holy Spirit’s Purpose.

  1. HE works in our world to bring out God’s design in Creation.

  • HE was there is the beginning giving directions to creation.
  • HE was active in setting in motion all the elements of creation.
  • HE continues to be active as HE seeks to persuade us to heed God’s call on our lives.
  • HE contends with us to bring about God’s purpose for our lives.

Remembering:

Genesis 6:3

3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. [7]

** So, it is obvious that the Spirit of God’s purpose is to direct the world and those who live in it to fulfill God’s purpose and plan for this world.

  1. HE works to bring about God’s design in the Church.

  • HE indwells every member of the body of Christ.
  • HE has endowed the church with special gifts – given to each member of the body.
  • HE equips its members with specific gifts to achieve certain purposes for the LORD.
  • HE empowers each member to use those gifts for the furtherance of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
  • HE enables the church to accomplish the purposes and plan God set from the beginning.

1 Corinthians 12:4-6

4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.  6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. [8]

i.          The word “gifts” in these verses comes from the Greek word – “Charisma” – which means = “spiritual endowment”= carrying the idea of “furnished with funding”. The Holy Spirit seeks to manifest HIMSELF in each member differently, but as ONE for a common good – reaching people. All gifts given are for the function of the body of Christ on earth.

ii.                   We do not think of the church of today as being “Charismatic”. When we think of charismatic, we go to shouting / running the isle and speaking in unknown tongues.                                                                          This is FAR from what it was in the first century with the early church. Many have a different belief about what “charisma” means and what it produces. From the Bible standpoint – it is the Holy Spirit dispersing God’s “gifts” to God’s church to achieve God’s will and plan on this earth.

iii.                  Sadly we have limited our “gifts” or “charisma” to the worship services. Certainly we need to worship the LORD, but this is something done through the SPIRIT; not “gifts”. Paul was trying to teach the Corinthians that they were misusing the “gifts” in the worship services.

1 Corinthians 12:7-11

7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom;  to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9  To another faith by the same Spirit;  to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10  To another the working of miracles;  to another prophecy;  to another discerning of spirits;  to another divers kinds of tongues;  to another the interpretation of tongues: 11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. [9]

iv.                 We must not limit the Work or “Gifts” of the Spirit to the area of Worship, or we will miss being able to fulfill the purpose and will God has for us.

v.                   Remember the Holy Spirit is given to guide us in all of life.

  • There is no aspect of our life that HE does not want to control.
  • There is no area in our life that HE does not want to control.
  • There is no part of our life that HE does not want to control.

  1. HE is seeking to allow US to see with the eyes of God.

  • HE is wanting US to see this world as God sees it – lost / hurting / in need of a Saviour.
  • HE is wants US to touch this world as God would touch it – with truth and gentleness.
  • HE is wanting US to listen to this world as God would listen to it – with compassion & healing
  • HE is wanting US to DO all these things by using the “gifts” HE has placed within us at the time of our salvation.

The greatest gift of the Holy Spirit is to bring understanding to us.

1 Corinthians 2:12-13

12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. [10]

I.      The Holy Spirit’s Purpose.

II.     Why Such Confusion about Spiritual Gifts.

A.                 God is plain about what HIS purpose is for the church and Christians.

  • It should not be strange at all how satan tries to turn the blessings of God into curses.
  • Satan worked in the lives of the Corinthians to use their “gifts” to their own shame. Example: Here is a man who has the gift of “administration” and he uses that gift to make money, but not for the church, missions or anything spiritual. To sum it up, these are lives without the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

B.                 There are TWO spirits dwelling in our hearts.

i.                     The Old Nature – which we shall call the “evil spirit”.

ii.                   The New Nature – which we shall call the “Holy Spirit”.

Romans 7:21-25

21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.

22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin. [11]

** This is showing us how we are when we are lost. SAVED, we still have the same struggles of life, but there is ONE difference – WE NO LONGER HAVE THE CONDEMNATION OF CHRIST ON US.

This is why he is able to start Chapter 8 with these words:

Romans 8:1-4

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. [12]

Conclusion:

A GREAT BIG NO NO!!

2 Corinthians 10:12-13

12 For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.  13 But we will not boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you.  [13]
