Text: 1 Sam. 4:14-22 Introduction: Elis son Phineas had a wife who was with child. Upon hearing news that the ark of God was stolen, Eli her father in law died, and her husband also died. She went into pre-mature labor and had a child. She also died in the process. The baby was named "Ichabod" meaning "the glory of Israel is departed." The naming of the baby characterized the three tragic events of that day. 1. The ark of God stolen (17c) 2. Eli died (v.18) 3. Elis sons died (v.17b) If these events characterized that day and the name Ichabod, in our day, "What shall we name the baby?" I. The Ark of God Stolen (v.17) This is a picture of the power and presence of God lost. A. The Source of Power- Rom. 1:4- Holy Ghosts power B. The Secrets of Power- The presence of the Holy Ghost explains 5 great secrets: 1. Explains the change wrought on the inside (2 Cor. 5:17). 2. Explains the convictions working on the inside (1 Jn. 4:1-3) a. Convictions about the book b. Convictions about the blood c. Convictions about the blessed hope Our convictions need to come from God not man.
3. Explains conflicts waring on the inside (Rom. 7:18-8:1). 4. Explains courage waxing on the inside (1 Tim. 1:7). 5. Explains the cravings on the inside (Phil. 3:10). II. Eli Died (v.18) This is a picture of preaching to the lost. A. Characteristics Of A Preacher (Ezek. 3) 1. Saturated By The Word (v.1-4) 2. Toughened By Opposition (v.5-9) 3. Indifferent To Success Or The Lack Of It (v.10-11) 4. Broken By A Burden (v. 12-17) 5. Right Understanding Of Our Responsibility (v.18) B. Character Of A Preacher 1. Humble 2. Happy 3. Holy
III Elis Sons Died This is a picture of our posterity lost. Illustration: The children of Israel refused to go into the Promised Land. They lost their land, lives, and their little ones. What a terrible thing to lose our children over to the devil!
