"Preach The Word"

"LET THE RECORD SHOW"

Text: 1 Cor. 4:1-21
Introduction:
The key phrase in verse 1 is this, "Let a man so account of us."   Paul was very concerned with his accountability with men.  Being in the ministry means that all eyes are upon us.  I want  God to say to me in the end, "Well done thy good and faithful servant."  I want to echo the words of Billy Sunday, "I want to be a giant for God." There were at least five things the Apostle Paul wanted the record to show.

I. Paul's Commission (v.1,2)
   A. As a Faithful Servant we are God's bondservant. Too many of us           want;  to  "lord" over the people of God instead of "serve" them.
     B. As Faithful Steward we are to be:
        1. Steward of time (Eph. 5:16)
        2. Steward over our treasure (1 Cor.16:1)
        3. Steward over our talents

II. Paul's Concern (v.3-5)
      A.   Not Man's Approval (v.3a)- Paul realized he could not please                everyone. He was aware there were many enemies who sought to                devour him.
       B.  Not My Own Approval (v.3b)- "I judge not mine own self."
Paul did not want to be decieved by his own estimation of himself.
So many people are caught up in their own little world.
        C. But God's Approval (v.4)- Paul was overwhelmed with a desire to
please God.   He realized without faith it is impossible to please the
             Lord Jesus Christ.

III.  Paul's Commitment (v.6-13)
          A.   To Glorify God (v.6-9)-  Paul wanted his suffering in this world                    to  glorify God.  There is no higher calling in the Christian life                    than to glorify God.
          B.  To Bless Others (v.12)-  Paul was committed to be a blessing to
other people.  The real definition of joy is as follows:
                1.   Jesus first
                2. Others second
                3. Yourself last

IV.  Paul's Compassion (v.14-16)
Paul's desire was not to shame them.  He desired they would know his instruction to them was because he loved them.

V.   Paul's Courage (v.18-21)
Paul realized he might have to come with either the rod of correction or in the spirit of meekness.
