A HAPPY LIFE, A HAPPY DEATH,
A HAPPY ETERNITY
Text: Psalm 23
Introduction:
The twenty-third Psalm is perhaps the best-known and bestloved
Psalm in the Bible. When a person can truthfully say,
"The Lord is my shepherd," then, and only then, can he truthfully
say, "I shall not want."
The person who has the Lord as his Shepherd "shall not
want," or lack:
I. A HAPPY LIFE.
For this happy life the Lord will provide:
A. Rest — "He maketh me to lie down . . ." (v. 2).
Matthew 11:28; Romans 5:1; Philippians 4:6, 7.
B. Guidance — "He leadeth me . . ." (v. 2). Psalm 32:8;
Psalm 119:105; Romans 8:14.
C. Restoration — "He restoreth my soul . . ." (v. 3). Psalm
51:12; I John 1:9.
D. Companionship — "Thou art with me . . ." (v. 4). Matthew
28:20; Hebrews 13:5.
E. Comfort — "Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me . . ."
(v. 4). II Corinthians 1:3, 4.
F. Provision — "Thou preparest a table before me . . ."
(v. 5). Philippians 4:19.
G. Power — "Thou anointest my head with oil .. ." (v. 5).
(Oil is typical of the Holy Spirit) Acts 1:8.
H. Joy — "My cup runneth over" (v. 5). John 15:11; I
Peter 1:8.
I. Goodness and mercy — "Surely goodness and mercy
shall follow me . . ." (v. 6a). Psalm 31:19; 138:1-26.
II. A HAPPY DEATH.
When a child of God comes to the time of death, he does
not have to fear — Jesus will be with him. He can say, as
did D. L. Moody at his death, "Earth recedes; heaven opens
before me. This is my coronation day." Hebrews 2:14, 15.
III. A HAPPY ETERNITY.
Thank God, "I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."
What a happy eternity for the child of God!
John 14:1-6; Revelation 22:3-5.
Conclusion:
Can you truthfully say, "The Lord is my shepherd"? If not,
trust Him right now. Then you will rejoice in "A Happy Life,
A Happy Death, And A Happy Eternity."
