"Preach The Word"

Funeral Messages by Carl Johnson

FROM HERE TO ETERNITY

Introduction:
On Friday, August 24, 1951, a United Air Lines passenger
plane struck the top of a hill above Oakland, California, and
broke into a thousand flaming pieces, killing fifty persons. A
book was found in the wreckage, entitled From Here to Eternity,
which was a sort of spiritual commentary on the sudden and
unexpected death that plunged fifty people from time into
eternity. Death means going "from here to eternity."

I. EVERYBODY GOES "FROM HERE TO ETERNITY" -
Hebrews 9:27; Romans 5:12; II Samuel 14:14.

II. THERE ARE ONLY TWO PLACES TO GO "FROM
HERE TO ETERNITY" —
Matthew 25:46.
A. The Ward of God makes it plain that the wicked go to
hell (Psalm 9:17); the unbelievers die in their sins and cannot
go where Jesus is (John 8:21, 24); and that they will be in hell
for all eternity (Matthew 25:41, 46; II Thessalonians 1:9;
Revelation 14:11).
B. The Word of God makes it plain that the saved go to
heaven (John 14:2, 3); the believers die in the Lord (Revelation
14:13); and that they will be in heaven for all eternity (Matthew
25:46b; I Thessalonians 4:17; Revelation 22:3-5).

III. WHAT WE DO WITH JESUS CHRIST DETERMINES
WHERE WE WILL GO "FROM HERE TO ETERNITY" —

I John 5:12.
A. The Word of God makes it plain that those who believe
on the Lord Jesus Christ have everlasting life (John 3:18, 36a;
5:24; 6:47).
B. The Word of God makes it plain that those who do not
believe on the Lord Jesus Christ do not have everlasting life
(John 3:36b; 5:40; 8:24).
A young man one day came to William E. Gladstone, the
great English statesman and Christian, and said, "Mr. Gladstone,
I would appreciate your giving me a few minutes in which I
could lay before ,you the plans for my future. I should like to
study law." "Yes," said the great man, "and what then?" "Then,
sir, I should like to gain entrance to the bar of England." "Yes,
young man, and what then?" "Then, sir, I hope to have a place
in Parliament, in the House of Lords." "Yes, young man, and
what then?" asked Gladstone. "Then I hope to do great things
for Britain." "Yes, young man, and what then?" "Then, sir, I
hope to retire and take life easy." "Yes, young man, and what
then?" he tenaciously asked. "Well, then, Mr. Gladstone, I sup-
pose I will die." "Yes, young man, and what then?" The young
man hesitated and said, "I never thought any farther than that,
sir." Gladstone, looking at him sternly and steadily, said, "Yowl
man, you have been so foolish. Go home and think life through!
He had given no thought to life eternal!

Conclusion:
I pray that you will give serious thought to life eternal, trust ,
Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour, and go "from
here to eternity" to be with Christ forever.
