New Year's Sermons
LIVING IN THE SUNSHINE ALL THE
COMING YEAR
TEXT: JUDE 20-23
Introduction: Jude 20—23, I believe the key phrase is in the exhortation at the beginning of verse 21: "Keep yourselves in the love of God."
I. SET OUT TO BECOME SPIRITUALLY MATURE
What does this mean? How are we to build ourselves up on our most holy faith, and why should we do it? The answer is found in II Peter 3:18.
II. MAINTAIN CONSTANT CONTACT WITH THE THRONE
There are two kinds of prayers which it is possible for us to offer. The first is the utterance of our own petulant desires, just our own wishes and wants— words, words, words! And this is not real prayer at all, But there is that prayer which is a burden the Holy Spirit places within us. James 5:16 speaks about this.
III. LIVE IN ANTICIPATION OF THE LORD S RETURN
It may sound startling, but I believe
it is true to say that not many of us who profess to be Christians really do this. When you got up this morning did you say, "The Lord may come today! This may be my last day on earth"? (Acts 1:11)IV. RESCUE THE PERISHING
If we are living in the sunshine, basking in the love of God, we shall want to get others out of the dark shadows and into the sunshine, and only as we do this shall we continue to live in the sunshine ourselves.
1. The first is Compassion--- Matthew 9:36
2. The second qualification for rescue work is Discrimination
This is spiritual discernment, wisdom, tact
3. The third qualification is Urgency
Jude says that we are
to pull men and women "out of the fire".V. CULTIVATE A HOLY HATRED OF EVERYTHING THAT IS SINFUL, IMPURE AND DOUBTFUL
The apostle Paul had something to say about this. "Let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God." (2 Corinthians 7:1)
