WHEN GOD CALLS Text: Isaiah 6:1-8 By: B. L. Harbour INTRODUCTION: Called of God! That sounds ominous. Yet, at the heart of our faith is the conviction that God does indeed call some to preach the gospel. I. PREPARATION Verse 1 tells us that Isaiah was in the Temple when he heard the call of God. Isaiah's world was falling apart. The death of Uzziah was not just the death of another man. Yet, in those dark moments of despair, Isaiah did what he had always done. He came before God in prayer and worship. II. PERVASIVENESS We also see the pervasiveness of God's call. Isaiah says that he saw the Lord high and lifted up, and that the train of the Lord's robe filled the Temple (v.1). Isaiah said that it was as if the very glory of God filled the Temple. III. PROBLEMS At this point, a problem surfaced. When God's call became apparent, Isaiah was immediately overwhelmed by a sense of inadequacy. This cry of inadequacy always erupts from within when God's call comes. We saw it in Moses, in Gideon, in Jeremiah, in Amos, in Elijah. Paul said to the Corinthians, "But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing greatness of the power may be of God and not from ourselves" (II Cor. 4:7). With one voice, we cry out, "We are earthen vessels. Of course what use can we be to God?" IV. PROVISION Isaiah learned a lesson that we need to learn today. A. He learned that God is still on his throne. Isaiah discovered that although earthly kings may come and go in endless procession, the King-Yahweh would rule forever and ever. B. Isaiah also learned that God would touch him at the very point of his need. C. When God calls, God provides. |
