HEREAFTER, NOT NOW Text: John 13:7-8 INTRODUCTION: This Disciple is like many today : 1. Denounce what they cannot clearly understand. 2. Question the integrity of God's plan (Matt. 16:22). 3. Very impatient if things go wrong (John 21:3). 1. "WHAT I DO THOU KNOWEST NOT NOW." Obviously : 1. Peter's sinful pride had morally blinded him. 2. He couldn't "connect" this with "striving" for the highest position in the kingdom. (Luke 22:24). 3. He had Jesus confused with worldly, conniving kings. II. "BUT THOU SHALT KNOW HEREAFTER" :The lesson is Obvious 1. Why did you shy at the basin and towel as we entered this room? "I, your Lord, have not!" (v. 14). 2. Pride causes a simple courtesy to be forgotten (15). 3. Such pride makes you less humble than Jesus (16). 4. Humble service is your source of happiness! (v. 17). III. THIS LESSON WAS FINALLY REALIZED _ We hear later _ 1. Peter: "God ... giveth grace to the humble." (I Peter 5:5). 2. James: "Be not many masters. . ." (James 3:1). 3. John: "Let us love one another...... (I John 4:7) 4. Paul, too: "Charity never faileth." (I Cor. 13:1-8) IV. "THOU SHALT KNOW HEREAFTER" BUT "NOT NOW" _ 1. This is why "faith is so important. (Heb. 11:6). 2. Man cannot see "the end from the beginning" as God. 3. Human minds differ in greatness - some greater than others - it is not strange that God is greater. 4. Even "angels" don't know some things. (Matt. 24:36). 5. We know little of this world, yet "strive" to enjoy it; it should be so in religion. 6. There is sin, God's plan of redemption, suffering, war, and Judgment to come ... Why? "What I do thou knowest not now; But thou shalt know hereafter. "
