SERIES: GOD S BLUEPRINT FOR CHURCH MEMBERSHIP SUBJECT: Church Membership READING: Romans 12:1-13 TEXT: ".. .we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members of another" (12:5). Introduction This verse is often used to challenge individual believers to a life of surrender. But to be fair to the context, we must observe that Paul is addressing the saints at Rome about church membership; so we must interpret these verses both personally and corporately. Note: I. The Basis for Church Membership (12:1-2) 1) The Dedication of our Bodies to God (12:1) 2) The Transformation of Our Souls by God (12:2) 3) The Satisfaction of Our Spirits in God (12:2) II. The Beauty of Our Oneness (12:3-13) 1) The Beauty of Our Membership (12:3-5) 2) The Beauty of Our Stewardship (12:6-8) 3) The Beauty of Our Fellowship (12:9-13) Conclusion We see, then, what we mean by church membership. The basis is clear. There must be dedication, transformation, and satisfaction in our lives. The beauty of that oneness must be expressed through our membership, stewardship, and fellowship, by the power of the Holy Spirit. Only then can we say with the psalmist, "...how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!" (Ps. 133:1). FROM DR. STEPHEN OLFORD- ENCOUNTER MINISTRIES, MEMPHIS, TN- USA |
