THE TEMPLE OF GOD
Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that
the Spirit of God dwelleth in you. I Cor. 3:16.
Holy Spirit seeks to call attention of Corinthian church to
many wrongs and difficulties in questions beginning with,
"Know ye not?" Note them in concordance. Particularly
note I Cor. 3:6; 3:17; and 6:19, 20.
I. Note the dumbness of the church members. Know ye
not?" Perhaps they had known, but it was dimmed by
divisions and dissentions. Today it may be the same, or
it may be formalism, ceremony, indifferernce or overt
acts of sins of the world.
A. If a Christian you are indwelt by the Spirit. "If any
man have not the Spirit of Christ . . . " If Christ
is not your Savior then you are indwelt by demons,
as the Gadarene.
B. If it be the temple of God, then there must be
worship within.
II. The danger: "If any man defile the temple."
A. Two-fold danger. First, to those who would destroy
the temple of the church. Carnality in church.
Corinthians in bitterness over resurrection.
B. Destroying the temple of the individual. If one
fails to heed God's reproofs, God will remove
him from the scene of action, and while his soul
will be saved, judgment will be worked out on him
while laying him low. I Cor. 11:30.
III. The Deliverance. "Glorify God . . . "' I Cor. 6:19
A. Since body is temple, it has special connection with
God, special consecration to God, and special manifestation
of God.
B. A Christian belongs to God. "Ye are not your own."
C. His duty is to glorify God.
D. He would hate everything that would defile.
E. He would cleave to that which is good in action.
F. And to that which is good in thought. Phil. 4:8.
G. To glorify God we must surrender our bodies and
our spirits, our all to Christ.
