INSIDE JERICHO
Scripture Lesson: Joshua Chapters 2 thru 6
I have often preached on "By faith the walls of Jericho fell
down," from Hebrews 11:30, but now I want to talk
about the people inside Jericho.
I. The Jericho people were great sinners. Lev. 18:24-5.
Deut. 18: 9, "When thu art come into the land which
the Lord . . . giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after
the abominations of those nations . . . maketh his son or
his daughter to pass thru the fire, or that useth divination,
or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a
witch . . . charmer . . . consulter with familiar spirits,
wizard, or a necromancer."
II. The people had enjoyed goodness of God. ( Great
bunches of grapes found by spies.) Also read Deut 8:8.
III. Inside Jericho they had heard of the judgments of God.
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob had lived in this area, and
had erected many altars. They knew of Sodom and
Gomorrah.
When Rahab heard of God's judgment on Egyptians, she
believed. Joshua 2:11.
IV. They knew the power of God inside Jericho.
Israelites had crossed over Jordan on dry ground.
V. The people inside Jericho trusted in their own good
works.
A. We have mighty walls, so we are safe.
B. We have mighty men of valor, trained to fight.
C. They laughed at acts of faith as Israel marched
around the walls.
VI. People inside Jericho were all but utterly destroyed.
Joshua 6:2.
A. Because of their sins.
B. Perished in spite of the long suffering of God.
C. In spite of the knowledge of God and His Ways.
D. Because they trusted in themselves.
E. Perished without remedy.
Some were saved. Rahab, the harlot, and her household.
She was saved simply because she believed.
