THE GREATEST SIN OF CHRISTIANS
And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil?
and if ye offer the lame and sick, is it not evil? offer
it now unto thy governor; will he be pleased with thee,
or accept thy person? saith the Lord of hosts. Mal. 1:8.
To say "greatest sin" is using a superlative. Peter, though
a saved man, denied his Lord; Corinthians were guilty
of divisions; James condemned evil speaking. Today,
we are guilty of prayerlessness, neglecting Word, gossiping,
backbiting, compromise, but the greatest sin is
giving to God less than our best. It shows half-heartedness,
lukewarmness—the sin of indifference.
In first chapter of Malachi we have picture of love of God.
Then, a picture of the sins of the people, especially those of
the priests offering polluted, blind, lame, sick. "Ye
offer polluted bread . . . "
Tell of what we give to ourselves, and what we give to God.
We come to God with less than our best and dishonor Him.
1. A life of unrest dishonors Him. "I will give you rest."
2. A life without peace dishonors Him. "My peace I leave."
3. A life of failure dishonors Him. "I can do all things."
4. A powerless life does, too. "Ye shall receive power."
Let us use "give" in its broadest sense:
I. Why do Christians give at all?
A. Decency demands an expression of gratitude, tho
cheap.
B. Christians often give to ease conscience.
C. Many give for appearance sake.
D. Some give to. conform to what is expected of them.
Ananias and Sapphire gave less than best and died.
II. Why do Christians give aas they give?
Selfishness robs God; half-heartedness makes giving
hard; ingratitude keeps many from giving; some ignorant
of better way.
III. Why should Christians give their best?
God gave His best, and we have received the best.
Then the day of reckoning is coming. The world is
waiting for our best as they die without God.
