DRAW NEAR OR FAIL
Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you.
Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your
hearts, ye double minded. James 4:8.
The parable of the Prodigal Son affords a double illustration
of this text: First, we have the sinner away from God,
lost in his sins, but invited to draw near to God. Secondly,
the parable illustrates the Christian who has drifted
away from the side of the Lord.
I. There are hindering causes to nearness with God:
A. Prayerlessness. "Ye have not because ye ask not."
Praying amiss will hinder. "Ye ask and receive not
because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon
your lusts." A wife may ask for her husband to
have the prayers of the church, so he can be saved
—that he might be a better husband and father.
The motive is unworthy for it to be for her
sake, when it should be for the sake of Jesus.
B. Friendship with the world hinders nearness. "Ye
adulterers and adultresses, know ye not that the
friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever,
therefore, will be a friend of the world is
the enemy of God." V 44.
C. Pride hinders. "Wherefore he saith, God resiteth
the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble." V 6.
"Humble yourselves in the sight of God and He will
lift you up." V 10.
D. Unclean hands will hinder. "Cleanse your hands."
"If I regard iniquity in my heart."
II. How can we draw nigh to God?
A. We must hide the Word of God in our hearts.
B. We must spend much time in prayer.
C. We must witness if we are to draw nigh.
D. Worship is essential to drawing near to Him.
E. Never lose the wonder of your salvation.
F. Resolve that "in all things He shall have the
preeminence."
III. Happy results for those who draw nigh to God
A. Our prayers will be answered. We'll love prayer
meetings.
B. A blessed fellowship with Him.
C. Peace and calmness in our souls.
D. We'll be effective servants.
E. We can help others by lifting burdens, bringing
cheer. "Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault.'
