FOUR-SQUARE CHRISTIANS
And of the Gadites there separated themselves unto
David in the hold to the wilderness men of might, and
men of war fit for the battle, that could handle shield
and buckler, whose faces were like the faces of lions,
and were as swift as the roes upon the mountains.
Chron. 12:8.
After Saul's disobedience and rejection, David was made king.
He could not yet show himself, hence in stronghold in
the wilderness. Warriors joined him. Benjaminites who
could use both hands in hurling stones and shooting
arrows, and soldiers of Gad came. They give us a picture
of what a four-square Christian ought to be:
I. He will be spiritually strong. "Men of might and war
and fit for the battle."
A. This Christian is adult—not a babe in Christ. We
have to go thru this stage, but do not have to remain
in it.
B. He is spiritually strong. Backsliders don't fight
well.
C. He is battle-conscious--ready to fight for Christ.
God's people are in constant warfare against Satan.
Paul cautioned the use of the "whole armor."
"Fight the good fight of faith."
II. A four-square Christian is trained. Could "handle
shield and buckler." Have to use defensive and offensive
arms.
Our mightest weapon is "the sword of the Spirit."
III. He is courageous. "Faces were like the faces of lions."
A. Courage to line up with the right cause.
B. Courage to stand for convictions.
C. Courage to move forward in face of difficulties.
"They went over Jordan in the first month, when it
had overflown all his banks, and they put to flight
all them of the valleys . . . " V 15.
D. Courage to speak out for Christ.
IV. He is obedient. "And were as swift as the roes."
A. Swift to obey. Disobedience cost Saul everything.
B. Will be thorough in his work. Not a quitter or a
slacker in the Lord's battle.
C. Obeys without question. "It is not mine to question.
