Hebrews 11:31 states, "By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace." The account of Rahab is a striking and thrilling one. It shows how God bestowed favor and mercy to this woman, who had lived a life which left her with a sordid and wicked past. Grace was greater than all of her sin. God withheld from her what she really deserved, because she had faith. She was not destroyed with the rest of the inhabitants of Jericho but was safely delivered. Lets look at several things about the working of the great grace of God in her life. I. Her Family- If you carefully study Joshua chapter two, you will discover that she was a Canaanite. That meant that she was an alien from the commonwealth of Israel and a stranger from the covenant of promise (Eph. 2:12). She was born cut off from God. Likewise, we were born in sinseparated from a holy and righteous God ( Ps.51:5). Also, that is true of all born of Adams race----we are born sinners (Rom.3:23). The lost sinner has the devil as his father ( Jn.8:44). II. Her Fornication- The Scriptures clearly tell us that Rahab was a "harlot" (Josh.2:1; 6:17). The term "harlot" suggests to us that her moral standards were low and that she had little respect for the human body. The Bible says believers are to "Flee fornication" (1 Cor.6:18). Sexual immorality will do several things to a person: 1- It will destroy your body through social diseases (many are incurable). 2- It will deaden the conscience. Every time your conscience is violated a part of it dies. 3- It will defile your reputation. You are looked down upon. III. Her Faith- She is included in the Hebrews Hall of Faith in Hebrews eleven. There are several things we should see about her faith. 1- The activation of her faith---It was originated in the sovereign grace of God and is instructed and nourished by the Word of God (Rom.10:17). 2- The announcement of her faith---Her works announced her faith to others around her (Heb.11:31; Ja.2:25). 3- The accomplishments of her faithIt caused her to sanctify her life from immorality, to deny self, and to be delivered (Josh. 6:25). Faith believes God, laughs at impossibilities and says, "It shall be done." IV. Her Favor- God showed mercy to her in spite of her sordid and immoral past. If God in grace would saved a person like Rahab the harlot, then there is hope for "whosoever |
