"Preach The Word"

The Deeds of a Good Mother

Ezek.19:10 states, "Thy mother is like a vine in thy blood, planted by the waters: she was fruitful and full of branches by reason of many waters." The "mother" mentioned in this verse is a direct reference to Israel. The nation of Israel is often referred to in Holy Writ as a vine, fruitful and full of branches. On the other hand, it can give reference to a mother. She either produces good fruit, which results in praise to God, or bad fruit, which brings reproach on the cause of Christ.

I. She Tows The Line. Proverbs 29:15 says, " The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame." The kind of mother the Lord commends in His Word, is the one who will not allow just anything to take place in the home. She expects and demands positive things out of her children. Many mothers do not have high enough expectations for their offspring. It is in harmony with Scripture to discipline children, for God does that Himself. The Scriptures tell us that God, "Scourgeth every son whom he receiveth" (Heb. 12:6).

II. She Trusts The Deliverer . Hannah in the Old Testament is such a sterling example of a mother who trusted God, even to the point of turning her son over to the Lord and His work (1 Sam.1:11). The mother of the old Methodist preacher, John Wesley, said the following. She was asked about her son deciding to go as a missionary to Georgia. Susannah Wesley said, "Had I a hundred sons, I should be glad to see them all engaged in such a blessed work, although I might see them no more in this world." That is a woman with great faith!

III. She Teaches The Dependable Book. Wise is that mother who teaches the Word of God to her little ones. It is impossible to start too early reading the Bible to them. When they are older and more mature, you can then begin to explain the Scriptures to them. David, the Psalmist, said, "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee" (Ps. 119:11).

IV. She Triumphs In Difficulty. Exodus 2:3 tells of how much pressure was upon Jochebed the mother of Moses. Children were being killed so she knew she must do something. Moses, as a small child was put in a homemade ark, finally winding up in the house of Pharoah’s daughter, to be raised until adulthood. The mother of Moses in the providence of God, was chosen and paid to nurse and take care of her own son. God is sovereign over circumstances.

V.  She Tells The Dear Story (The story of Christ’s love.)

VI. She Terrifies The Devil -It troubles the devil when he sees a praying mother on her knees.
