Text: Luke 12:1-9 Introduction:One of the sobering realities the Bible presents is that there is a hell. It is a place of future punishment that the Bible speaks about in the Old Testament and the New Testament. Three words in the Bible speaks of the awful place of Hell, where their is future penal suffering for those who receive not the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus warned many times about hell and the judgment to come. He spoke of "everlasting punishment" in Matt. 25:46. That is eternal punishment that will not end. There is a lake of everlasting fire at the end of this life for those who do not accept the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. The Bible uses the word "hell" 54 times. It is referred to in the Bible as: "Unquenchable fire" (Mt.3:12) "Furnace of fire" (Matt.13:42,50) "Fire and brimstone" (Rev.14:10) "Black darkness" "Smoke of torment" "The Lake of Fire which burns with brimstone." "Where the worm dieth not." "The Eternal Fire prepared for the devil and his angels." "Everlasting burnings" (Isa.33:14) Notice the Following Things About Hell Hell is a place of unquenched thirst. (Want just one drop) Hell is a place of horrifying screams and cries. Hell is a place that houses the worst dregs of humanity. There will be good moral people there, but some of the worst of humanity will be there. Hell is a place where the worm (or the conscience) will never die. Hell is a place where their is continual torment. 1. From memory 2. From fire 3. From others Hell is a place people who enter will not leave. (everlasting punishment) Hell is a place where the human body is not consumed. (It will burn and burn but never burn up). Ills. If God could make a busy that would not burn (as with Moses in OT), then it would be no problem for him to cause the body to not burn. Hell is a place of regrets. People will ask, "Why did I not take the Lord Jesus Christ as my Savior in life? It would have been so easy, but now I am in hell." All the wicked will be in hell. Ps.9:17 says, "The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all nations that forget God." Human power cannot preserve one from hell. Ezek. 32:27 says: "And they shall not lie with the mighty that are fallen of the uncircumcised, which are gone down to hell with their weapons of war: and they have laid their swords under their heads, but their iniquities shall be upon their bones, though they were the terror of the mighty in the land of the living." Matt 10:28" And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." The body suffers in hell. Ever had a burn and endured the pain of a severe one? Hell will have that kind of constant pain. The soul suffers in hell. That is the immaterial part of man that lives inside of this body. Inward and outward pain in hell. Hell is where the beast, the false prophet, and the devil will be cast. Rev. 19:20; 20:10. We should work hard at keeping people out of hell. Prov 23:14," Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his." Jude 1:23,"And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh." Hell was originally prepared for the devil and his angels, but all who reject Gods offer of salvation, will spend eternity there with the devil and His crowd. Whatever you might imagine hell to be, it will be millions, billions, trillions of times worse than anything you could ever imagine. It must have been an awful day when the Atomic Bomb went off at Nagasaki and Hiroshima in Japen. Flesh was roasted and melted. But, as bad as it was it was a one time deal. The people suddenly perished. It will not be that way in hell. The suffering from the extreme heat will go on forever. The wise person will make sure that he or she avoids hell and that they know the Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible says in Proverbs 15:24, "THE WAY OF LIFE IS ABOVE TO THE WISE, THAT HE MIGHT DEPART FROM THE HELL BENEATH." The truely wise person will settle his or her salvation because you would surely not want to go to this dreadful, awful, unending place of punishment and torment called "hell." It is not drinking, doing drugs, or living an immoral life that sends people to hell, it is simply UNBELIEF that sends a person to hell. Unbelief will not accept Gods provision for mans sin at Calvary, thus it belittles the work that Christ did on the cross when He died for the sins of every man. 1- We sinned in Adam--Rom 5:12 "For by one man sin entered..and death by sin...all have sinned." 2- We sin daily in our practical lives--if by nothing else but not loving the Lord our God with all of our heart, all of our soul, and and all of our minds. That is why a man needs to be saved is the fact that we are sinners by birth and if stay a sinner, you do so by your own wrong choice. Jonathan Edwards in his classic sermon on "Sinners In the Hands of An Angry God"said the following: 1. There is no lack of God to cast wicked people into hell at any moment. Mens hands cannot be strong when Gods hands rise up. He cannot only put men into hell, He can easily do it. 2. They deserve to be cast into hell, so that divine justice never stands in the way. The sword of divine justice is every moment brandished over their heads, and it is nothing but the hand of arbitrary mercy, and Gods mere will, that holds it back. 3. They are already under a sentence of condemnation to hell. The one who does not believe is condemned already, simply because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. Every unconverted person rightly goes to hell. 4. They are now object of that same anger and wrath of God that is expressed in the torments of hell. The wrath of God burns against them; their damnation does not slumber. The pit is prepared, the fire is made ready, the furnace is now hot, ready to receive them, the flames do now rage and glow. The glittering sword is whet, and held over them, the pit hath opened its mouth under them. 5. The devil stands ready to fall upon them, and seize them as his very own, at whatever moment God may permit him. The lost belong to the devil, he has their soul in his possession, and under his dominion. The old serpent is gaping for them, hell opens its mouth wide to receive them, and if God should permit it, they would be hastily swallowed up and lost. 6. God is under no obligation by any promise to keep a lost man out of hell one moment. Deliverance from hell comes through the indwelling of the Lord Jesus Christ in the heart of a man. Edwards said, "The bow of Gods wrath is bent, and the arrow is made ready on the string. Justice bends the arrow of your heart and strains the bow. All of you that has never passed under a great change of heart, by the might power of the Spirit of God upon your souls, all of you that have never been born again and made new creatures, and raised from being dead in sin, and have experienced life and light, are in the hands of an angry God. There are some reasons why no one here should refuse Christ and choose hell over salvation in Christ.
I. GOD DOES NOT WANT YOU TO GO TO HELL Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 2Pe 3:9 ¶ The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
A. God Gave His Son (pictured in Abraham and Issac at Moriah) B. God Gave His Spirit (He comes to make the soul uneasy about sin and judgment ahead) C. God Gave His Word It is an instrument of conviction. It is sharper than any two-edged sword. All of this to keep sinners out of a place called hell. If he had wanted you to go, he would have not send His Son, His Spirit, and His Word.
II. JESUS DOES NOT WANT YOU TO GO TO HELL Heb 2:9 "But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man." A. His death on the cross proves it. (Father remove this cup..nevertheless not mine will but thine..) B. His love for sinners proves it. Jn. 15:13 says, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." C. His suffering proves this. 1Pe 3:18 ¶ For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: HE SUFFERED PAIN, HUMILIATION, BEING FORSAKEN BY THOSE HE LOVED, THE CUP OF SIN, BUT YET HE DRANK SINS CUP FOR US, OR IN OUR PLACE.
III. THE HOLY GHOST DOES NOT WANT YOU TO GO TO HELL Read Jn. 16:7,8: "Reprove" has the idea of exposing our sin, giving us a sense of shame, to tell a fault, or to correct. 1. Of sin- not deny such a thing call sin when the Holy Spirit of God begins reproving. 2. Of righteousness- that Jesus is totally righteous and that we are unrighteous. 3. Of judgment- that there is judgment ahead for those who have not trusted Christ and His precious blood to save. If you go to hell, you will go over the efforts of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirits efforts to bring you from your sin to salvation.
IV. PEOPLE IN HEAVEN DO NOT WANT YOU TO GO TO HELL Lu 15:10, "There is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth." No: Mother or Father--Brother or Sister---Aunt or
Uncle----Cousin---Former Acquaintance In This Life-
V. PEOPLE IN HELL DO NOT WANT YOU TO COME THERE Ills. Rich man said, (Luke 16:27-31) 27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: 28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. 29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. 30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. 31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead." His cry was, "Send somebody to tell my brothers, because I do not want them to come here."Men in hell are interested in:REVIVALS-- PERSONAL WITNESSING ---MISSIONS but it is too late for them. They want others won to Christ.
VI. HELL WAS NOT PREPARED FOR YOU- It was prepared for the devil and his angels. (Matt.25:41) There is no hope for a "fallen angel" but there is for "fallen man." Man can be redeemed from his fall. That is an impossibility for an angelic being.
VII. HELL IS AN AWFUL PLACE A. Place of darkness (fire that will not give off light) B. Place of torment( fire, conscience, company) C. Place of suffering (mental and physical) D. Place of thirst (unquenched thirst) E. Place of separation 1. From all that is good and holy. 2. Saved friends and loved one. 3. Peace and rest. (In heaven they "rest" from their labors.) F. Place of no-hope. When a person wakes up in hell, it is too late to accept the Lord Jesus Christ and reverse things at that point. It will be too late! CONCLUSION: I am going to ask several questions: 1- Is anything worth taking a chance of going to hell over, any sin or any personal rebellion? No certainly not. 2- Is it wise to gamble with your soul? No because life is so short and can end so quickly. That is why the Bible says, "Now is the accepted time, Behold, now is the day of salvation." 3- Jesus expressed it is senseless to "lose your own soul." The soul, the spirit within that body you are in will spend eternity either in heaven or in hell. Jesus said, "What is a man profited if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul?" 4- You would be a wise man, woman, boy and girl to come to Jesus before one day you wake up in a dreadful permanent place called hell. Why not come to Jesus today? He will save. He will satisfy. He will secure, if you will only come to Him. SERMON BY DR. TOM WALKER- ZION HILL BAPTIST CHURCH---MARION, NC--USA |
