THE IDEAL MOTHER
Text: 1 Samuel 1:1-28
Introduction:
1. Rudyard Kipling said, "if I were hanged on the highest hill, I
Know whose love would follow me still."
Kipling was not sentimental about his Mother.
He was touching upon a Mothers true love.
2. The picture of Hannah in 1 Samuel kneeling in prayer-
her lips moving in silent prayer for the child yet unborn,
is the classic stanch of Motherhood.
3. Successful Motherhood in 1998 will be built upon the same spirit-
ual foundation that it had in the beginning.
4. I wish to pay tribute to the precious memory of my mother, and
to all mothers today.
5. Notice some characteristics of Hannah:
I. THE BARRENNESS OF HANNAH. Vs. 5-7
A. The Lord had shut up her womb. vs. 5b
B. Elkanah had two wives - Peninnah and Hannah.
1. Hannah had no children.
2. In the Bible days the woman was looked upon who had no children.
3. But this woman had one sorrow in her heart, and she was barren.
II. THE BITTERNESS OF HER SOUL Vs. 10
"And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the Lord, and
wept sore."
A. She was of a sorrowful spirit. vs. 15a.
B. Eli thought she had been drunk as she prayed only her lips moved.
there was no audible voice heard.
1. Eli said: "how long will thou be drunken? Put away thy wine
from thee."
2. Hannah answered: "I have not drunk neither wine nor strong
drink, but I have poured out my soul before the Lord."
3. Read Psa. 62:8 "Trust in Him at all times; ye people, pour
out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us." Selah.
III. THE BETTER PART OF HANNAH vs. 10
A. She was a woman of Prayer. vs.10
"And she prayed unto the Lord."
Lets see what kind of prayer yields that kind of power.
1. Hannah's prayer was reverent. vs. 11
2. Hannah's prayer was rewarded. vs. 18
Nothing but prayer can heal the bitterness of a broken heart.
B. She was a woman of promise. vs. 11
"Then I will give him unto the Lord all the days of his life,
and there shall no razor come upon his head."
Illustration:
Like Hannah, R.G. Lee's Mother gave him to God as is evidenced
by a letter she sent him while he was a student at Furman University.
"We are praying for you every day. I want to live on in my
preacher-
boy after I'm dead. So take care of your body. Study hard.
Preach
your best. I am counting on you. I gave you to God before I saw
your face. Don't rob God of what I gave Him."
C. She was a woman of tears. vs. 10b "And wept sore."
IV. THE BLESSING OF GOD. Vs. 17,18, 20.
A. Vs. 18b, "So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance
was no more sad."
B. Vs. 19b. "Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about
after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his
name Samuel, saying because I have asked him of the Lord."
V. THE BENEVOLENCE OF HANNAH. Vs. 11,13, 18.
A. Vs. 11b, "If thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine
handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but
wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him
unto the Lord all the days of his life."
B. Eli the Priest said to her, "Go in peace, the God of Israel
grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked him."Vs. 17.
1. Hannah won the victory through prayer.
2. You can win through prayer too over your trials.
C. Vs. 28, "Therefore also I have lent him to the Lord, as long
as he liveth he shall be lent to the Lord, And she worshipped
the Lord there."
D. Hannah returned to the temple a year later.
1. and dedicated the boy Samuel, to the Lord.Vs. 24-28 [her gift
to God.]
2. "As long as he liveth, he shall be lent to the Lord."
3. Most people want their children in a good work, but very few
want them in the Lord's work.
* * Eli's blessing to Hannah for her gift to the Lord is in
vs. 18-
21.
4. In her prayers, Hannah grew to realize that the best she could
do for her son was to raise him to be devoted to God.
5. Hannah realized that vows made to the Lord should be kept at
all costs, especially those concerning the raising of
children.
Conclusion:
1. The joys of Motherhood are many.
2. Surely there is no greater joy than this:
a. to see the fruit of ones womb stand before their maker.
b. and acknowledge the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
3. That is The Real Mothers Day.!!
4. God is looking for someone to raise her children to become like
Samuel's.
5. Will you become one of these courageous Mothers today?
